“In Remembrance of Lives Lost to Domestic Violence in Maryland”

Upper Marlboro, MD… Members of the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office Domestic Violence Intervention Division (DVID) joined Governor Martin O’Malley and Lt. Governor Anthony Brown at the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence (MDNAVD) 26^th Annual Memorial Service Monday night in Annapolis.

In a moving and solemn ceremony, members of the Sheriff’s Domestic Violence Intervention Division stood with Governor O’Malley and Lt. Governor Brown and citizens and family members of those lost. They each held a candle to symbolize each life, as they stood against the backdrop of a heart that contained the names of each of the victims.

 “Any life lost is one too many,” said Michaele Cohen, Executive Director of the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence (MNADV). “But, we celebrate the survivors and focus attention on changing laws to reduce domestic violence, improve victim safety and providing greater abuser accountability.”

During the Service a survivor of domestic violence spoke about her experiences escaping a violent relationship. She thanked the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office Special Victim’s Assistants for their help - accompanying her during court processes and assisting her with her transition to the House of Ruth.

“Each year when I attend this beautiful memorial, it reminds me of why I do this work and helps me to keep focus,” said Barbara Harvard, a Domestic Violence SVA in the Sheriff’s Office.

Lieutenant Colonel Regina Taylor, Bureau Chief of Field Operations said “The Maryland Network’s Candlelight Vigil is a sad tribute to the victims of Domestic Violence, but I am heartened by the attendance of the Governor and Lt. Governor, and other state officials and legislators who continue to strengthen laws that provide protection, safety, and hope to victims.

Sheriff Deputies Arrest 1988 Robbery Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Sheriff’s Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest on Monday February 10, 2014, of Ronald Jefferies of Capitol Heights, MD on an arrest warrant for Robbery with a Deadly Weapon. The warrant was obtained by the County Police Department on July 8, 1988.

According to the warrant, on July 1, 1988, Jefferies allegedly attacked a male victim with a deadly weapon in an apartment in the 6200 block of 64^th Street in Riverdale Park, MD. After striking the victim with a blunt object to the head, the victim was tied-up and stabbed in the back. The warrant further states that Jefferies took several hundred dollars from the victim, along with his ATM card. The warrant also states that the victim was able to escape and identified Jeffries as his attacker.   

The Sheriff’s Cold Case Warrant Team’s investigative efforts led them to believe that Jefferies was in Capitol Heights, MD. He was apprehended in the 6200 block of Walker Mill Road Capitol Heights, MD., where he was taken into custody and transported to the Prince George's County Detention Center.

Robbery Suspect Arrested

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Sheriff’s Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest of Markel Dinkins of Hyattsville, MD on last Wednesday, on an arrest warrant for Robbery, which was obtained by Riverdale Park Police Department on January 8, 2014.

According to the warrant, on December 12, 2013, Dinkins allegedly exited a 2005 Silver Chevy Impala and attacked a male victim from behind in the area of Taylor Road and Tuckerman Street in Riverdale Park, MD. After taking the victim’s briefcase and laptop, Dinkins fled on foot. The warrant further states that on December 21, 2013 a vehicle matching the description of the Impala, was stopped and one of its occupants was identified as Markel Dinkins.

The Warrant/ Fugitive Division’s investigation determined that Dinkins was located in Washington, DC. With assistance from the Metropolitan Police Department he was apprehended in the 2300 block of Ainger Place Washington DC., where he was taken into custody. Dinkins was also charged with Assault Second Degree, and two counts of Conspiracy Robbery.

First Degree Assault Suspect Arrested

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Sheriff’s Warrant/Fugitive Division has arrested Michael Rose of Clinton, MD yesterday on a First Degree Assault arrest warrant obtained by District IV County Police Detectives on January 24, 2014.

According to the warrant, Rose was operating a vehicle on Livingston Rd near Beretta Rd in Accokeek, MD last June when he and a female passenger became involved in a verbal disagreement. During the argument, Rose produced a knife and held it to the female’s throat. The warrant further states that when the victim attempted to exit the car at a stop sign, Rose accelerated the vehicle causing the victim to fall out of the car.  The incident was reported to the Police resulting in a warrant for Rose’s arrest.

Deputy’s investigative work into Rose’s whereabouts led Warrant Deputies to the 17000 block of Clinton Drive in Accokeek, MD. Where Rose was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections (DOC).

He is also charged with Second Degree Assault.

Sheriff Deputies Arrest Attempt 1st Degree Murder Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest of Celvin Eulises Meja-Ramos of Hyattsville, MD on an arrest warrant issued by the Circuit Court of Prince George's County, MD on January 8, 2014 for Attempted – Murder 1^st Degree.

Meja-Ramos was indicted by a Prince George’s County Grand Jury for an incident that occurred on September 10, 2013, in which he is accused of assaulting a male victim with a handgun in an attempt to kill him. 

 The Warrant/ Fugitive Division determined Meja- Ramos’s whereabouts as the 9400 block of Adelphi Road, Hyattsville, MD, where he was apprehended on January 20, 2014.  He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Prince George's County Department of Correction. 

Meja- Ramos is also charged with Assault 1^st Degree, Use Handgun in a Crime Violence, Participation in Gang Activity, Carry Handgun, and Conspiracy- Murder 1^st Degree.

Deputies Arrest Theft Suspect/ Close Two Warrants

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Warrant / Fugitive Division has arrested Shamika Staggs on an arrest warrant for Theft over $100,000 obtained by County Police on January 2, 2014.

According to the warrant, Staggs acquired a falsified property deed and illegally rented a vacant town home in the 10000 block of Keepsake Court in Upper Marlboro, MD. The warrant further states that Staggs sold the property to an investment group and received over $195,000 as proceeds from the sale of the property. 

Upon receipt of the warrant, Warrant/Fugitive Deputies began an investigation into Staggs’ whereabouts. On February 3, 2014, she was located and apprehended at a residence in the 15000 block of Kennett Square Way in Brandywine, MD.  

Staggs was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.  She is also charged with Issuance of a False Document, False Entry in a Public Record, and Forgery of Private Instruments and Documents.  

Staggs’ arrest also closes an outstanding 2010 warrant for Fraud Conversion issued by the Prince George’s County District Court.

Sheriffs/U.S. Marshals Task Force Arrest Attempted 1st Degree Murder Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Warrant/Fugitive Division has reported the capture of Rashad Wright on an arrest warrant for Attempted First Degree Murder obtained by County Police detectives.

According to the warrant, on June 22, 2013 Wright and two other males were sitting inside of a parked vehicle in the 1200 block of Elfin Avenue in Capitol Heights, MD when an argument ensued between Wright and one of the men in the car.  Following the argument, Wright allegedly produced a pocket knife and stabbed the victim in his neck and back when the victim attempted to exit the vehicle. Wright then fled on foot prior to officers’ arrival.

Deputies investigating Wright’s whereabouts determined that he may have fled to the state of Georgia. With assistance from the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, Wright was located at a residence in Byron, Georgia where he refused to open the door for officers.  Access to the home was granted by the home owner and Wright was eventually found hiding in a bedroom. He was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Houston County Detention Center where he will await extradition to Prince George’s County.  

Wright is also charged with Attempted Second Degree Murder, First Degree Assault, Second Degree Assault and Reckless Endangerment.

Deputies Arrest Robbery Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest of April Stone of Capitol Heights, MD on an arrest warrant for Robbery, which was obtained by the Prince George’s County Police Department on November 05, 2013.

According to the warrant, on July 24th, 2013, Stone allegedly attacked a female victim in the 1400 block of Early Oaks Lane Fairmont Heights, MD, punching her in the head and face while attempting to take the victim’s purse. After taking the purse, Stone fled into a private residence. The warrant further states that the victim recognized her attacker. Stone was later positively identified as April Stone and the warrant was obtained. 

On receipt of the warrant, the Warrant/ Fugitive Division began to investigate Stone’s whereabouts. She was located and apprehended on the 5100 block of Duel Place, Capitol Heights, MD., where she was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Prince George's County Department of Correction.  Stone was also charged with Assault Second Degree.

First Degree Assault Suspect Arrested

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest of Michael Warrick on an arrest warrant for First Degree Assault that was obtained by County Police detectives on January 18, 2014.

According to the warrant, on January 12^th Warrick became agitated with a female victim and began choking and slapping her before throwing her to the ground. The warrant further states, Warrick dragged the victim down a flight of stairs before she was able to escape to her home. He attempted to gain access to the victim’s home but fled before police officers arrived.

Sheriff’s Deputies investigating Warrick’s whereabouts located him in the 300 block of Thomas Drive in Laurel, MD. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.

Warrick is also charged with Second Degree Assault, Reckless Endangerment, and Fourth Degree Attempted Burglary

Deputies Arrest Arson Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest of Lenniscleo Yalanza Brown of Suitland, MD on an arrest warrant for Arson 2^nd degree, which was obtained by the Prince George’s County Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) on January 25, 2014.

According to the warrant, on November 30, 2013, the OFM was notified of a vehicle fire at Creston Street and 50^th Avenue in Hyattsville, MD. Later that same day, Brown called 911 to report his 2002 GMC Yukon missing. Brown was then advised that his vehicle had already been recovered. Fire Investigators subsequently conducted an investigation and determined the cause of the fire to be intentional. On January 25, 2013, the OFM had contact with Mr. Brown and subsequently obtained this warrant.

The Warrant/ Fugitive Division contacted Brown, who turned himself in at Sheriff’s Headquarters, located in Upper Marlboro, MD. Brown was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections. He was also charged with Malicious Burning 1^st degree, Malicious Burning Fraud, Misrepresentation of Insurance Policies and Reckless Endangerment.

Sheriff’s Deputies “Polar Bear Plunge Team” Honors Memory of Sergeant Billy Falby

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Office of the Sheriff’s 17 member “Polar Bear Plunge Team” said this year will be even more special for them because the team will honor the memory of Sergeant Billy Falby, a faithful member of the team until his untimely death last year.  The Sheriff’s team will join other Law Enforcement personnel in the 4^th Annual Police Plunge this Friday, January 24, 2014 at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis.   Special T-shirts with Sgt. Falby’s photo were made for the Plunge with all proceeds from sales donated to the Special Olympics in Sgt. Falby’s name.

Sheriff High attends Ribbon Cutting for new Family Health and Wellness Center at Suitland

Upper Marlboro, MD… Sheriff High joined County Executive Baker, Councilwoman Karen Toles other County Officials and Community Leader Elsie Jacobs this morning for the ribbon-cutting at the new Family Health and Wellness Center at Suitland.

“This is an exciting new center for the Health and Wellness infrastructure of Prince George’s County, “said Sheriff High. “At the Sheriff’s Office, we’re looking forward to contributing to the health and wellness of the community and setting a good health and wellness example through the Prince George’s County Basketball Wellness League. We’re proud to have one of our Commanders, Colonel Orlando Barnes serve as the Commissioner of the League.”

Commissioner Barnes said that the Basketball Health and Wellness League is open to every county agency that wants to have a team. “League play is expected to begin in early April,” he said.

Deputies Seize Machine Gun while Serving Peace Orders

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Domestic Violence Intervention Division (DVID) seized a Machine Gun while serving two Peace Orders at a residence in the 1000 block of Balboa Avenue in Capitol Heights, MD. The gun is a Ruger TEC-9 with an extended magazine, containing 23, 9mm bullets.

Deputies arrested and charged Iesha Doby (who was named in the Peace Order) for First Degree Assault and Conspiracy to First Degree Assault.  James Doby, her cousin, was arrested and charged with First Degree Assault and Firearm Possession by a Convicted Felon. The Peace Orders were filed against Iesha Doby and an unidentified male who is alleged to have threatened the Petitioner.  

When deputies arrived at the residence on Wednesday, January 8^th, three individuals ran out of the home advising deputies that James Doby, who was inside of the home, had pointed a black gun described as an “Uzi” at them and demanded that they talk to him.

Iesha Doby and James Doby were detained after they attempted to leave the home through a basement door.  They were taken into custody without further incident.

Both Iesha Doby and James Doby face additional charges.

Deputies Arrest Suspect after a Home Invasion during a DV Dispute

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Domestic Violence Intervention Division (DVID) has reported the arrest of Antoine Gatkin for Second Degree Assault and Destruction of Property on Monday, January 6, 2014.

On Monday, Deputies were dispatched to the 3200 block of Walters Lane in Forestville, MD for a domestic dispute in progress.  Prior to their arrival, they were updated by Public Safety Communications that there were sounds of struggling and screaming in the background and the suspect had forced his way into a residence by kicking in the exterior door.

                          

When Deputies arrived at the residence, they observed Gatkin fleeing on foot. A foot pursuit ensued; after a brief chase, deputies caught and detained Gatkin with no further incidents.  He was taken into custody and transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.

DVID Deputies Arrest Attempted 2nd Degree Murder Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Domestic Violence Intervention Division (DVID) arrested Davonta Bennett on an Attempted 2^nd Degree Murder arrest warrant obtained by County Police Criminal Investigations Detectives (CID) on December 19, 2013.

According to the warrant, Bennett stabbed another relative twice following a verbal argument at a residence in the 6500 block of Seat Pleasant Drive in Seat Pleasant, MD.  He fled the scene before police arrived.

On December 21^st, DVID deputies located Bennett in the 7600 block of Landover Road in Hyattsville, MD. He was taken into custody without incident and released to CID detectives for interviewing.

Bennett is also charged with one count each of First Degree Assault and Second Degree Assault.
